I think people want this to be too perfect! Yeah, I can see why it has so many reviews and folks are hoarding it! Aroma: Seems to be predominantly Cyprian Latakia, with a small percentage of Turkish. Not to be outdone, the Virginia(s) are soft and sweet and the Latakia neither heavy nor cloying. However prepared, topping the bowl with a bit of kindling is strongly recommended for a quick and even light. It can be reminiscent of dried stonefruit if smoked delicately. Presentation is rich and velvety. It is a crumble cake (not a flake), and packs as easily as any blend in the world. Someone recommended having a bowlful of Penzance with a glass of Laphroaig. I highly recommend this for those who want a great English tobacco. Mad that it wasn't living up to its hype in my head. So many complex flavors, so many wonderful experiences when sipped and savored. However, approached with gentle hands and patience, they will both yield their hidden delights and favor you with their mysterious and oriental treasures. I was smoking a lot of different english blends, so this one just sort of blended in with the rest. The texture of the damp crumbly flakes is unsatisfying. The tin label, if such a thing matters, is about the crudest I've seen. Then amp it up and get some clouds forming and the VA sweet gives way to delicious Latakia and Oriental complexity that expertly blends all the flavors together into a unique, delicious, relaxing experience. Pointed by many as the heir of Bengal Slices, it's something I had to come across sooner or later. 2) Though balanced, I find this balkan blend to remain quite complex and will hold your interest throughout the smoke. Its amazing! And it is. Second, the crumble cake cut allows the smoker to rub it out to their liking. Having said all that , It is a great blend and if you can get it by all means at least to try one tin . As heretical as this might sound I do not think Penzance is the best Estoterica blend. If you are too heavy handed with the tobacco, you get a wet lump at the bottom of the bowl. Not a bad thing when judged in a vacuumand probably great with an Islay maltbut not the finely layered and sophisticated flavor palette which I was led to expect. I prefer Presbyterian mix, and squadron leader over this also. All others pale in comparison. This is one seriously 'manly' smoke. I have smoked this weed in several of my pipes now, and in 43 years I have never found a tobacco that varied so much in taste and smoking pleasure from one pipe to another! I like the orientals to come forth a little more in a blend like this; some spiciness to balance out the latakia. I've smoked 2000, 2008,2016, and last run of 2020/21. It's peaty, toasty, herbal, muddy, and like a great Islay scotch, is full of smokey complexity. Penzance possesses a tasty latakia earthiness and a creamy, satisfying smokiness without an overload of nicotine. I can safely say though that this blend is the first where I can really taste the varying flavours and the changes throughout the bowl - as a novice I thought I was missing something but it was just that I was not smoking the right tobaccos! I rubbed out one flake gently. Other smokers don't find it objectionable, those who are sensitive don't much care for it. I do recommend this to every pipe-smoker to try at least oncethe whole tin. However, Penzance is VERY cool burning and works well in thin-walled pipes that otherwise are too hot to handle with most tobaccos. It wasnt an aversion to Latakia as I loved and smoke a number of f heavy Lat blends in those days. Moisture content is perfect and, depending on your pipe-loading preference for this flake, it folds and/or rubs out very easily. Likewise, I feel that, even though there are doubtlessly some superb Virginias in this blend, they somehow are not allowed to shine forth with their full potential. My first smoke was accomplished in a flame grain Ser Jacopo Picta Magritte (bent Dublin). I think most of the reviews capture the essence of this superb blend. It comes in a small rectangular tin and is in wax paper in thin precut slices, that crumble very easily. It smelled nice and smokey in the bag, and I was beginning to think I had a Lat bomb on my hands. Disappointed. It has a easy but pleasant aftertaste, but it doesnt last long. The complexity of the flavors are such that I had a hard time reading my book, I just sat there concentrating on this marvelous tobacco. All the hoopla and admiration was a mystery to me. I was quite pronounced and still is. I give it a 8 out of 10. It's heavy on the Latakia and Orientals. The smell in the bag is strong Latakia, a musty, rich smell obvious even through a sealed bag. The Tobacco crumbles very easily and makes for easy packing, however in the windy state of California lighting was a bit of a chore. It is a thoroughly well crafted, incense like, pungent english mixture. Took a bit to get it lit, but once it was lit the flavor was wonderful. I do recall that I had a hard time keeping the stuff lit. But as Maxwell Smart would say, it "missed it by that much". I then proceeded to back the pipe to tightly and created a frustrating experience for myself. I just restocked and wished I hadn't. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. It's a remarkable blend, but surely not as venerable as the nu-tweedsters might have us believe. I know I'm only adding fuel to the fire here, as this stuff is near impossible to get a hold of.
